Grapetree Bay, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

If you’re dreaming of a Caribbean escape with fewer tourists and a slower pace, St. Croix in September might be the perfect fit. You can enjoy warm weather, tropical beauty, and a laid-back vibe that’s hard to beat.

While September is part of hurricane season, the weather isn’t always bad — many days are sunny with only brief showers. You can also appreciate lower prices on accommodations and excursions, fun activities, and local events.

This guide covers everything you need to know, including weather details and the best things to do to help you plan your vacation to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

St. Croix Weather in September

St. Croix weather in September is typically hot and humid, with a mix of sunshine and scattered rain showers. Daytime highs average around 86°F, while nighttime lows dip to about 76°F. There’s an average rainfall of 5.9 inches during September, but most showers pass quickly.

Because September is in the middle of the Atlantic hurricane season, from June through November, we recommend keeping an eye on weather forecasts. While major storms aren’t guaranteed, it’s always a good idea to have flexible travel plans and travel insurance.

Is September a good time to visit St. Croix?

September is a good time to visit St. Croix if you're looking to avoid crowds and take advantage of off-season deals. Beaches are also relatively quiet, making for the perfect relaxing getaway.

While there aren’t as many events in the low season, there are a few you can enjoy, including the Annual Labor Day 5K and drag brunch.

While some businesses may have limited hours or take seasonal breaks, there are many outdoor activities to enjoy, including kayaking, snorkeling, and hiking.

St. Croix in September: Travel Considerations

Before booking your vacation to the U.S. Virgin Islands in September, here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Hurricane season: September falls during hurricane season, so check weather updates and consider refundable bookings and travel insurance.

  • Warm weather: It’s hot and humid during September, so plan your outdoor activities in the morning or early evening, wear cool clothes, and stay hydrated.

  • Off-season closures: Some restaurants or shops may reduce hours or temporarily close for the season, but many businesses remain open.

  • Transportation: It’s best to rent a car to explore the island. While taxis are available, they can be pricey or hard to find during the slow season.

  • Respect the locals: Although St. Croix is an amazing vacation destination, be mindful of the locals who live here full-time. Be kind and courteous — a simple “good morning” or “good afternoon” goes a long way here.

Whether you're visiting for rest, adventure, or a bit of both, St. Croix offers plenty to do in September. From scenic outdoor excursions to fun local events, it's a great time to experience the island's unique mix of nature, culture, and community. Snorkeling or Diving

When: Daily

Snorkeling or diving is a perfect way to cool off on a warm September day in St. Croix. Some of the best spots are Frederiksted Pier and Dorsch Beach, known for their clear-blue water and diverse marine life. You can rent gear from or take a diving course with Cane Bay Dive Shop in Frederiksted.

ATV Tour

When: Most days in September

An ATV tour with Gecko’s Island Adventures is one of the best ways to enjoy St. Croix in September. Take a guided tour to explore the rainforest and historical sites. Guided adventures include a two-hour ride through rugged trails, the Xpedition STX tour with panoramic views and cultural stops, or a sunset tour that ends at the beach with a glass of champagne.

Buck Island Trip

When: Daily

Buck Island Reef National Monument protects a small, uninhabited island about a mile and a half north of St. Croix, and it's only accessible by boat. You can join Big Beard's Adventure Tours for a half-day or full-day trip to enjoy incredible scenery and go snorkeling and swimming. Big Beard's also offers sunset cruises for an evening experience.

September’s heat means early hikes are best, but the scenery is well worth it.

Our favorite trails include:

Cultural Experiences

When: Daily

St. Croix offers rich cultural and historical experiences year-round, and they’re especially enjoyable during the quieter month of September.

Some of the best sites include:

  • Fort Christiansvaern: This well-preserved 18th-century Danish fort covers over seven acres in Christiansted. It has unique colonial architecture, a small museum, and scenic waterfront views.

  • Virgin Island Food Tours: Taste traditional dishes and learn about St. Croix’s history and culture on a guided walking food tour.

  • Columbus Landing: This beach at Salt River Bay is where Columbus landed in 1493. It was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples and is the site of the first recorded conflict between Europeans and Native Americans.

  • Caribbean Museum Center for The Arts: Located in Frederiksted, this is the island’s only art museum and features local Caribbean artists, rotating exhibits, and events.

Nightlife

When: Daily

While St. Croix’s nightlife is low-key, there are still fun things to do after dark. If you want to be outdoors, you can enjoy a west-end sunset or a cruise with Lyric Sails or take an evening kayaking tour. You can also head to Divi Carina Bay Casino or get late-night drinks at Common Cents Pub and Shupe’s on the Boardwalk.
