St. Croix is one of the most unique vacation destinations. It’s a part of the United States, so you don’t need a passport. It’s also beautiful year-round and offers the perfect mix of fun and relaxation.
Below, we’ll share the best time to visit St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, and what you can expect during each season, including travel tips, weather, and activities.
Whether you want to plan your vacation during the busy season, between December and April, or during the off-season, May through November, every month offers a unique experience.
What are the best months to visit St. Croix?
While St. Croix is a wonderful place to visit year-round, the best month depends on the experience you’re looking for. Many people love visiting St. Croix in April and May because it’s at the end of the busy season and before the summer heat and hurricane season hit.
No matter what time of year you visit St. Croix, you can enjoy relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and delicious food.
St. Croix Weather by Month
St. Croix is warm year-round, and temperatures stay about the same. That said, it does slightly cool down during the winter.
The following chart shows the average high and low temperatures and rainy days each month:
While these are averages, you may experience more or less rain depending on the year. Rain doesn’t often last all day but can during the rainy season in summer and fall. St. Croix’s hurricane season is also from May through November.
St. Croix Peak Season: December through April
Although St. Croix is a much less touristy island than others in the Caribbean, we do have a peak season: December through April.
Snowbirds enjoy heading to St. Croix for warm, sunny weather. February through April are typically the driest months in St. Croix, perfect for exploring outdoors and relaxing on the beach!
During peak season, there are many fun things to do, including beach activities and kayaking adventures.
You can also enjoy unique events, including:
Christmas Boat Parade: A large boat parade in the Christiansted Harbor with fireworks and local vendors (mid-December)
Carnival: A huge event that takes place over several weeks with a children’s and adult’s parade and Festival Village with rides, food trucks, and music (late December to early January)
Agrifest: A weekend-long agriculture and food fair and one of St. Croix’s most popular events (President’s Day weekend)
St Patrick's Day: A day-long festival with a parade, vendors, and parties (the Saturday of St. Patrick’s Day weekend)
Planning a Trip to St. Croix During Peak Season
If you plan to visit St. Croix between December and April, keep the following in mind:
Book your accommodation and rental car as soon as possible
Make reservations for restaurants and activities in advance
Know that prices may be higher due to demand
St. Croix Low Season: May through November
May through November is the best time to visit St. Croix to enjoy fewer crowds and save on travel and accommodation expenses.
Although it’s the rainy season and a slower time of year, you can still experience great weather and unique activities. We especially love the nice beach weather during the off-season and fun excursions, like a bioluminescence bay kayaking tour.
There are also special events during the low season, including:
Jump Up: A quarterly street carnival with food and drink vendors, live music, and shopping (the Friday closest to Valentine's Day, the first Friday of May, the Friday closest to Alexander Hamilton Day, and the Friday after Thanksgiving)
Mango Melee: A family-friendly event with a focus on mangos, with food competitions, local vendors, music, and more (July)
Oktoberfest: Various Oktoberfest events throughout the island (September)
Planning a Trip to St. Croix During Low Season
If you plan to visit St. Croix between May and November, keep the following in mind:
Many restaurants close for vacation for up to a few weeks during the low season
Some days are more rainy than others, so you may have to pivot plans (going to the movies and shopping in Downtown Christiansted are great rainy day activities)
This is also hurricane season on St. Croix, so travel insurance is recommended in case of inclement weather that may affect your trip
Why is St. Croix less popular?
While St. Croix is a wonderful travel destination, it’s much less touristy than St. Thomas, USVI. Both islands are very similar, with gorgeous beaches, warm weather year-round, and a unique history and culture. However, St. Croix may be less popular because it has a more local feel, while St. Thomas is more tourist-friendly.
While St. Thomas is a bit more developed and offers more activities and nightlife, St. Croix is ideal for a laid-back island vacation.
